For many years now ArmadaCon has been helping to bring popular works of science fiction, fantasy and horror to a wider audience by supporting the RNIB's Talking Books service.
Here is an introduction on what they do
RNIB Talking Book Service is a library of professionally recorded audio books, delivered through the post to your door. 180 professional narrators can be call upon to read the books and it takes five days on average to record an RNIB Talking Book. To create such a talking book takes a lot of money: To record a new book costs about 1,000 pounds- large books can cost around 2,500 pounds.
Since the RNIB Talking Book Service began in 1935, they have issued over 80 million audio books to people with sight problems in the UK.
In 2007 The National Library for the Blind (NLB) merges with the RNIB to create the RNIB National Library Service. The new library offers a comprehensive range of books and accessible information on talking book and also in braille, Moon, large and giant print and online.
There are over 14,000 titles to offer to over 41,000 Talking Book customers. This makes it the largest unabridged audio collection of books in the UK, one of the largest in the World.
Talking books can be read on special DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) players, which are lightweight and easy to use, with high colour contrast controls.
Using DAISY technology readers can skip to a new chapter or insert a bookmark, in the same way a print reader can.
Only 5% of books are published in audio format, due to cost. This means that a lot of literature is unavailible to those with sight problems.
